What Exactly Is MSME Or SSI?

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) or Small Scale Industries (SSI) are those established firms in India whose annual turnover does not exceed beyond a certain limit prescribed by the Government of India. These industrial places a very vital role in priority sector lending, tax exemptions or capital investments. Thus, maintaining the economic balance in the country.

If you are willing to start an MSME or SSI you will first need to go through the registration process. The SSI MSME registration is done under Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Act. Any manufacturing unit or some other businesses whose overall investment is approximately RS. 10 crore can register themselves under this Act.

SSI/MSME Registration Process

The first thing that you will need to do is fill an MSME online registration form from the official website of MSME. After successfully submitting the online application form, you will then need to take out the print of the filled application form and send it to the issuing authority along with all other necessary documents. After verifying your application, the authorities will then issue a provisional certificate so that you can carry on with your business and in mean time they shall provide you with actual registration.
The SSI registration procedure is as same as that of MSME registration. There is not much difference in it. It takes at most 15 working days for the authorities to register your firm under MSME Act.

What Are The Documents Required

You will need to furnish several documents claiming that you as well as your business is legitimate. Here is the list of all those documents that you are required to submit along with the application form.

  • Print out application form.
  • Self attested copy of PAN card.
  • Personal identity proof like Adhaar Card, Voter's Card or Driver's License.
  • Residential proof such as Ration Card, Adhaar Card etc.
  • Bank details
  • Valid documents of shareholders and directors (if any).
  • Lease agreement if the property is not owned.


Overall, if you are willing to take a step into this sector, their is probably only one major thing that you will need to do i.e. getting your business registered. If you can register your business with the Government, you sure will get lots of opportunities to grow your business to much higher level without any legal issues. However, there is one thing that all the MSME owners should understand. If your annual turnover exceeds the predetermined amount, you will then have to surrender your registration with the Government and opt for another one.
